Mosaic Basic Course
Where: Courses are held in our studio at 686 The Queensway, Toronto. Free parking in side streets

Option 3: Six weeks, 3 hours each week on Thursday 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Description: Crunched for time but want to learn how to make a mosaic? We are happy to offer this course that covers all the basics of mosaic art. We will provide a plaque as a substrate for your mosaic art but you are welcome to bring in any object of your own to work on. Students will learn about the different materials to use in a mosaic such as vitreous glass tiles, Mexican smalti, or Italian smalti, marble, Opus Romano tiles, adhesives, sealers, cement, thinset and grouts so they can begin their own mosaic.
This is the first step of learning the different techniques used in the construction and installation of mosaics.You will learn about Mosaic history, the development of the art over thousands of years, the fundamental skills you need to make your first mosaic. You will learn how to cut and place tesserae using the direct method. Issues such as design and colour choices will be also covered. The skills, which you will learn in the Basic Mosaic Course, will enable you to deal with larger and more ambitious projects.
After the class time is finished, you are welcomed to attend our Open Studio Time. (These are the times when you can come and work on your mosaic project under our supervision in an all mosaic environment) to finish your project.
Please note that material costs (tiles, glue, board, tools, etc.) are extra. Prices for materials and tools is $80 or $140 ( if you choose to purchase Italian made Montolit tool)

Mosaic Portrait Course

Description: One of the most difficult mosaic applications you can achieve with us is how to make a mosaic portrait. We will teach you that and more, using a soft or hard copy, define the light and shadow in it, find and create character and muscle lines that is very important and unique to this individual.
You will study color, design, andamento (the direction of tesserae) and the cutting techniques using the hammer and hardie or the Montolit nippers.
Materials used can be Smalti or stained glass or any other material that have been used through the centuries like stone and marble.

2 Hour Mosaic Workshop

Description: In two hours you will learn briefly about mosaic as an ancient art form and how to use the elements of art design, colour, and texture in a mosaic art piece, you can choose from a frame, a wood board or a coaster. Everyone will receive individual attention, You will have lots of mosaic tiles of different colours and also a variety of materials to choose from, we will incorporates found objects such as pebbles stone, glass, shells to implement the idea of “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and working together as community to reuse and recycle.

Pebble Mosaic Course
